Hey there!

I want to personally thank you for welcoming me into your inbox and I want to welcome you to my community as well.

Now, a little over 2 weeks ago I sent you my very first blog post. Not a newsletter, not an upcoming product or an event – but a personal blog post. It was pretty scary for me to be completely transparent, but I knew it was right for me. Thank you everyone for your support. “This is an issue that I, as a dancer who is short and naturally curvy, have struggled with for as long as I can remember….When I was a teenager taking dance classes, going to auditions, starting to make dance a career – J.Lo and Beyonce were not famous yet, and there was no role models/images/acceptance of beautiful women with big booties and curves!  I would go to auditions and all they wanted was tall, blonde & skinny. I fit into NONE of those categories.  That’s one of the things that led me to Partner dancing, because as long as I found a good match for me, I was the “right” height and size.  However, I still struggle with liking my body/hating my body – and it gets harder to stay at a weight/size I am “happy” with with each passing year.
Some days I look in the mirror and think I’m small and fit, especially compared to the average person out there, and other days I look in the mirror and think – how can I dare put on a costume and get on stage?!  It’s an ongoing issue that I continue to work on.  So I totally understand, and appreciate, what you have written!

Now in case you don’t know me, here is a little something about little ol’ me: 

  • I’m not a fitness and dance instructor that sells “weight loss” as the outcome of taking my classes. I sell beauty. More specific, your beauty! How…? Well I turn people who thought, “I can’t do that!” into “Oh snap, I really can!”  or “I’m too fat!” into “Damn I’m fabulous!” And you know what…I didn’t do it, my students did. They always had it, I just gave them a tool to find it – that’s all.
  • I’m also obsessed with shows about wedding gowns. I get goose bumps every time.
  • I’m living proof that you can look bigger than you are on stage! (Even at 4’10. Shhhh..don’t tell)
  • I go through virtuous spurts of trying to drink 1 glass of wine a week…but I have 2 small kids, so aint happening. (Don’t judge)
  • And last but not least, Bikram yoga keeps me sane.

 

Ok, so now that’s out of the way…I wanted to tell you that this year my first-born went to 1st grade. I know, I know. He’s already gone through kindergarten, but this is 1st grade! It’s now full day of elementary school – it just feels different. This month I will be smiling through tears as I watch him walk up the massive stairs through the massive doors into the massive building. I know he’s ready, but am I?

What a lesson this is.

Our children are constant reminders that we can do anything. So as the return to school and the fall season can come with a bit of stress, grown-ups please don’t forget about you. Make time for yourself to do what you love or try something new. (Maybe take your first SharQui class – wink wink)

  1. So nice to hear about “normal” people bellydancing and getting fit. After being told I was too old to join my teachers troupe (I was 50 and in better shape than most of them) I withdrew into myself and just quit everything. Then I found SharQui. Thank you so much for making me feel like a woman again. I’d love to take the instructor course, but will wait till I finish my cancer treatments.

    I am so happy for you. Wow over 50 and in awesome shape. You go girl! I hope that your last treatments will be easy for you and I look forward to you taking the instructor training and being part of the SharQui instructor family as well.

  3. Hi Oreet,

    I did read your blog a few weeks ago and it seems that women do have issues with their bodies. We go through puberty (I sure don’t want to re-live the tween and teen years. I filled out at 10 and by age 12 I was my full adult height not to mention my weight it shot right up there. Then all the curves worked into my shape and the hormones were raging mad. When I got to high school I felt better about myself; I realized that other young women were going through the same thing.

    Over the next few years I started to accept myself the way I was. Then marriage came along and eventually pregnancy and childbirth and I did well with these mental and physical changes. Before pregnancy happened I discovered belly dance and I really got into it and I am still loving it.

    Ladies, I say, accept yourself for who you are. If you don’t like something about yourself then make a small change and surround yourself with positive girlfriends (we all need girlfriends). Take very good care of yourself because there is only one of you (you are one of a kind).

    Thanks for the great newsletter. I really do enjoy it.

    I liked your first one that was so open and honest, and then all of the women who wrote to say they also feel that way, or have similar feelings and now have someone to share them with and just say the truth of how they feel. Your newsletter and the response makes me feel like we’re all sisters! Sharing and caring, I find it cool (call me corny if you want)

    I also like the current one where you sell beauty and then explain what you mean. What a concept! It was great. I love it. That’s a great way of viewing things. I think it can help so many of us to hear it that way.
