Isaac is a Canadian born percussionist, Isaac Hersh Gutwilik was introduced to Yemeni folk music and percussion while living in Jerusalem during the late 70s by Yemeni choreographer/singer, the late Yitzhak Levy Awami. While living in NYC, Isaac specialized in the traditional Jewish folk music of Yemen and performed regularly with Yemeni artist, Ahmed Alrodini, an expert in music from Yemen’s Red Sea coast. They became a duo that performed numerous distinct tempos and rhythms such as Lahaji as well as much rarer African influenced Red Sea (Tehama) and Southern Coast repertoire .
Isaac has a passion for the lesser known, but deeply rooted music of Yemen and hopes more people get to experience and feel it.
