Here’s What You Said

Hey there!

Thank you to everyone who commented on my blog last week about my curious confession. If you missed it, I was sharing my thoughts on a mad cool makeup brand created by a WOC, which made me love it even more. But it got me thinking about my own community—are people here because they value what I’m teaching, or is it the exotic appeal of my heritage?

Here are some beautiful responses I received…

I stay for all of the above. Honestly, I wouldn’t have gotten so into bellydance with a non-woman of color teacher. I love all of the instructors in the virtual studio but what made me feel comfortable is you as the creator and instructors like Kris. Even now when I talk to my local community about bellydance they see it as something for white women. How crazy is that?! Learning about your culture is definitely a plus. First off I want to honor you as the WOC that you are. Secondly, I feel more informed as there are few people who I know with your cultural heritage around me, so I am glad to know more about the various groups that you hail from. The virtual studio is my lifeline and has been since 2020. Even though I can go to local classes, I prefer you virtual studio because all of the classes are high quality and I love the convenience. The diversity in the virtual studio is beautiful, and we all can find connection in it. And…you are an excellent business woman with high quality products, which is a gift in the fitness industry world. – Tirra

It’s not where you’re from, accomplishments or what you look like, though those are very loved, 🥰 it’s your incredible spirit. ✨ – Rasa

I was drawn to you because of your magnetic personality and style of dance, the first of which influences the second. You are energetic, strong, creative. You don’t waste time talking a lot in class, and your choreographies are original and beautiful. You are non-judgmental and appreciate the beauty and special gifts in all students. I also love that you have a deep understanding of a specific middle eastern culture. Whenever I study a particular dance style, I like to study with those who come from the culture (or one of the cultures) where the dance originates. Not that I won’t study with those who are not from the culture, but the cultural connection has great value. – Coco

So it seems like peeps stay for various reasons, but it appears that my backstory is a plus. Ok cool, I’m grateful for that. But truth – I want you to know that I’m always trying to make my lessons worthy of every single buck you pay, ‘cuz If you’re shelling out money, you better be gaining more than just a smile.

So, it seems like people stay for various reasons, but it’s clear that my backstory is a plus. I’m grateful for that. But the truth is, I want you to know that I’m always working to make my lessons worth every single buck you pay. If you’re investing in this, you deserve more than just a smile.

So, with that in mind, I’d be thrilled for you to join our Virtual Studio. Our focus is on authentic bellydance, getting stronger, becoming more flexible, and feeling joyful. If you ask me, it’s the complete package.

Dance with you soon,
Oreet
