Persian Elegance: The Jewish Persian Influence in Classical Dance 

Happy Mizrahi Heritage Month!

Step into the world of Persian dance through a Mizrahi lens. In this workshop, we’ll explore how Jewish Persian communities preserved and interpreted classical Persian styles – infusing them with their own cultural identity, rhythms, and spirit. We’ll take a brief journey through history, tracing how dance evolved across Persian dynasties and how Jewish and neighboring cultures added their own artistry to the movement. Then, bring it to life by learning to incorporate a Persian flair into your traveling steps, turns, and expressive handwork. Let’s celebrate the beauty, pride, and elegance of Persian dance as it bridges the diversity of heritage and faith. REPLAY AVAILABLE

About Rivkah

Rivka began her dance life as a ballerina, studying at the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute. She found new freedom and connection to her Persian Mizrahi heritage with Bellydance. She has studied with many instructors from around the world as well as at the National Museum of Dance, School of the Arts in upstate NY. For 12 years she led the Notsa Rivka Dance Company, the only dance studio dedicated to traditional middle eastern dance in the NY North Country. Now based in Saratoga NY, she performs both as a soloist and with the trio AYA bringing together classic bellydance, a modern edge and a uniquely Persian flare.

Join MK, SharQui’s social media manager, as she walks you step-by-step through how to use CapCut, the free and beginner-friendly editing app, to create scroll-stopping videos tailored specifically for dance and fitness pros. Rhythms of our Roots with Hersh

Celebrate Mizrahi Heritage Month through the deep, soulful rhythms of Jewish communities from Yemen, Morocco, and Libya. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the unique drumming techniques and traditional songs passed down through generations of Mizrahi Jews. REPLAY AVAILABLE

Led by a skilled percussionist rooted in these traditions, this class will:

  • Introduce you to foundational rhythms from these different Mizrahi communities

  • Teach authentic hand-drumming techniques

  • Explore the cultural context and history behind the music

  • Include traditional songs used in celebration, ritual, and everyday life

  • Give you time to practice, play, and connect through rhythm

    Whether you’re a dancer, musician, or curious learner, this is a powerful opportunity to connect with the heartbeat of Mizrahi Jewish culture through its music.

Bring your frame drums, riq or darbuka if you have one – or just your hands and your curiosity.

SharQui Workout: Our traditional high-energy bellydance workout.

SharQui 2: Our traditional high-energy bellydance workout but kicked up a notch with intricate moves as well as speed.

SharQui Veil: A traditional SharQui Workout infused with safe veil technique. Enhance your workout from the added upper body toning. Veil is optional as options for students without veils will be provided. Newbie to experienced friendly.

SharQui Styles: Our traditional high-energy bellydance workout but fused with an inspiration of another dance genre. Each week will be a new dance style fusion.

SharQui Strength: Your traditional SharQui Workout paired with light weights.  

SharQui Core: This cross training class combines light weights and Pilates mat exercises with bellydance movements, all focused on strengthening the abdominals and back for SharQui.

Crash Choreo: Learn a 1-2 minute choreography that gets your heart rate up.

Total Body Strength: This is traditional strength training class with weights and cardio. A great way to cross train your bellydance practice!

Stretch: Start and end your week with a deep stretch class that incorporates standing and floor positions to open and lengthen the muscles from all angles. A wonderful and important compliment to our SharQui program to help you stay flexible,  injury and pain free.
