Finding Practice Time

Finding Practice Time

by Laylianah Mahasin

We all have super busy lives, so how are we supposed to add practice time to our already bursting schedules?  It’s easier than you might think.

I sometimes tease my students about making sure they are practicing at least 50 hours a day. But the truth is, just a minute or two of practice every day will do much more for you than an hour of practice once per week. And it doesn’t even need to be a minute or two set aside just for practice! You can incorporate it into things you are already doing.

For example, when you’re in the bathroom brushing your teeth, fixing your hair or taking a shower (TAKE CARE NOT TO SLIP!!), these are excellent times to practice hip shimmies, mayas, or figure 8’s.

Anytime you are sitting, at your desk, watching TV, in your car (WHEN PARKED OR AT A STOP LIGHT PLEASE!!), is a good time to practice upper body work like shoulder shimmies and chest circles. Being in a sitting position prevents movement in the lower body, helping to isolate the upper body.

You will find yourself going to different places throughout your day, even if it’s just from room to room in your house. Instead of just walking to get there, try doing a Gwhazee March, Step Twist, Choo-choo Shimmy, or Cha-Cha step.

Get creative and have fun with it. You will improve quickly and your everyday activities will become much more interesting!

Love,

Laylianah
